Another way to visualize responsibility in a process in addition to our traditional process model, is to let the flow wander between different swimming lanes that represent the responsibility.
Visualization of the responsibility flow
In swimming lane models, work is done to clarify responsibility with the help of swimming lanes. Then the swimming lanes correspond to an organizational unit, position or role as in the example above, with activities in themselves that flow between the swimming lanes. In this example, the role is the executor of all activities that lie in its swimlane, as objects placed in the swimlane get a relationship to the object that makes up the swimlane.
Swimming lane models are used to advantage to visualize and clarify how, for example, handovers and responsibilities should be organised. Check out our free guide to swimming lanes if you want to learn more!
