There could be multiple reasons causing published material to stop working. An important aspect to consider is if the published material has worked earlier or if this is the first time you are using the publishing destination, and if you are getting any error messages while publishing. If your publishing fails or if there are error messages, read this FAQ to help you figure out what might be causing it.
Continue reading for the most common reasons published material stops working if it has worked previously and there are no errors when publishing.
Browser cache
Your web browser stores (caches) files from the web page so that it loads faster the next time you visit it, which is good for performance but can sometimes cause issues. If you recently re-published your material from 2c8 Modeling Tool and it doesn't look like you expect, it could be because the browser has stored files from the earlier publication. To troubleshoot this, open the published material in a different browser (Firefox, Chrome, Edge, etc). If the published material looks as expected in the other browser, the browser cache is most likely the issue. To solve this you need to clear the browser cache which is done in the settings of the browser you are using.
The published material is being updated
If you are visiting published material in the web browser and you see a message saying "This site is currently being updated" it's because someone is currently publishing to the destination. Wait a while and revisit the published material and it should work when the new files have been uploaded.
The destination you are publishing to is not working
If you are publishing your material to a web server and can not reach it when trying to visit it in the web browser it could be the web server that is causing the issue. Error messages that might occur:
- 404 Not Found - the webpage you are trying to access does not exist or is not found.
- 500 Internal Server Error - a general error message implying that something is wrong with the web server.
If you get any of the above error messages and host your own publishing destination we recommend you to contact your IT to start with. If we are hosting your publishing destination, please contact our support.
If you are publishing to a shared drive (for example D: or F:) and a colleague can't see the published material, it might be because your colleague is missing read permissions for the destination. In this case, we also recommend turning to your IT to solve the issue.
Fails during publishing
If you recently published material but can't see it when trying to view it the publishing might have failed. Most of the time you will receive an error message while publishing if it fails. There are many reasons that can cause publishing to fail, for example losing internet connection while publishing. Start by trying to publish again. Read more in this FAQ if you are experiencing issues with the publishing failing.
